ARAB GULF STATES INSTITUTE IN WASHINGTON (AGSIW) Frequently Asked Questions

Why establish a new institution on the Gulf in Washington where there is no shortage of organizations covering the Middle East?

  • Organizations in Washington, DC cover the Arab Gulf states on a sporadic, often crisis-driven basis, usually in the context of the energy sector, terrorism, or conflict with Iran.
  • AGSIW plans to fill the gaps and provide sustained, in-depth analysis on the social, cultural, economic, and political profiles of the countries of the GCC and issues of concern to the region and the United States.

Who funds the institute and will it be truly independent?

  • To date, AGSIW donors are the Future Center for Advanced Research and Studies in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The institute is seeking private sector support as well to further diversify funding.
  • Management responsibility for AGSIW resides solely with the institute’s Board of Directors.
